Nursing school is hard. The coursework is demanding, the clinical hours are exhausting, and the emotional weight of learning to care for people at their most vulnerable can feel overwhelming. For many students — especially those who are first-generation college students or come from underrepresented communities — the journey can feel isolating. That's where mentorship changes everything.
What Mentorship Actually Looks Like
Mentorship in nursing isn't just career advice over coffee. It's a sustained, intentional relationship between an experienced nurse and an aspiring one — built on trust, shared experience, and a genuine commitment to the mentee's growth. At FNEF, we match mentees with mentors based on specialty interest, career goals, and lived experience, so the connection goes deeper than a résumé review.
A mentor might help a student navigate a difficult clinical rotation, prepare for the NCLEX, work through imposter syndrome, or simply remind them — on the hardest days — why they started. These moments don't show up in outcome data, but they're often the difference between a student who persists and one who doesn't.
The Research Behind the Relationship
The evidence for mentorship in nursing education is robust. Studies consistently show that nursing students with mentors have higher academic performance, greater clinical confidence, lower attrition rates, and stronger professional identity formation than those without. For students from underrepresented backgrounds, the effect is even more pronounced — mentors who share their identity provide not just guidance, but proof that success is possible.
A 2023 study in the Journal of Nursing Education found that minority nursing students with same-race mentors were significantly more likely to complete their programs and pursue advanced degrees than those without mentorship support. The pipeline problem isn't just about getting students in the door — it's about keeping them there.
How FNEF Matches Mentors and Mentees
Our matching process is thoughtful, not algorithmic. When a student applies to be a mentee, we ask about their specialty interests, where they are in their education, what kind of support they're looking for, and what challenges they're currently facing. When a nurse applies to be a mentor, we ask about their clinical background, their availability, and the kinds of students they feel best equipped to support.
We then make matches by hand — because we believe the quality of the relationship matters more than the speed of the pairing. Once matched, mentors and mentees are supported with resources, check-ins, and a community of other FNEF pairs who are navigating the same journey.
For Mentees
Aspiring nurses at any stage — from pre-nursing to advanced practice — who want guidance, support, and connection.
For Mentors
Licensed nurses (RN, BSN, MSN, CNP, DNP) who want to give back and help shape the next generation of the profession.
The Commitment
Flexible — even a few hours a month can make a meaningful difference in a student's trajectory.
Be Part of Someone's Story
Every nurse reading this was once a student who needed support. Maybe you had a mentor who changed your trajectory. Maybe you didn't — and you know exactly what that absence felt like. Either way, you have something invaluable to offer the next generation: your experience, your perspective, and your presence.
FNEF is actively recruiting mentors across all nursing specialties and degree levels. If you're a licensed nurse who wants to give back, we'd love to connect you with a student who needs exactly what you have to offer.
Join the Mission. Shape the Future.
Support the next generation of nurses and be the reason a nurse succeeds.
